On Monday the 8th Oct: I went to town & started work in Dr Williams's Library.
On Tuesday the 9th Oct, I recorded my vote for the misnamed Jew, Sinclair, & then went to Dr Williams' his [sic] Library, where I worked for 4 hours, then called on mine Editor, & so returned.
On Wednesday the 10th Oct, I went again to Dr William's Library. On emerging I read in the evening paper the return of Sinclair by a majority of 3062 votes. The Khaki wave still runs here.
On Thursday the 11th Oct, I worked from 10.20 to 1.20 at Dr W's Library: then lunched pleasantly with Ker: then returned to the Library & worked till 5 p.m. when I returned home.
On Friday the 12th Oct, I worked from 10.20 to 2.20 p.m. in Dr W.'s Library: & then returned home, learning on the way that Walthamstow had followed the good lead of Romford, & returned an Unionist. The report of my lecture in the local paper fills nearly 2 columns.

On Saturday the 13th Oct, I travelled to Colchester to spend the Sunday with General Gatacre & to preach to the troops. On the following day I preached 3 times in the garrison Church, twice to the soldiers & once to the general congregation. In the afternoon I went for a walk with mine host & Lady G. Their house is full of Soudan spoils, the Mahdi's black flag, Dervish coats of mail, &c &c. On Monday, the 15th Oct, I went to Oxford, & there continued until Friday evening when I returned to Ilford. On that afternoon I attended the funeral of Sir Henry Acland in Christ Church. There was an immense crowd, among whom I saw Monty. On Saturday, I wrote a sermon, attended the foundation–stone–laying of S. Edmund's, Forest Gate, and held the monthly meeting of my Chancellors. We discussed Sunday observance. After that I talked with Albert Mason about his work for the Oxford local Examn, & then to bed.
